Indian - The Unquiet Sky

In anticipation for their upcoming release I've decided to throw this bastard up on here. A savage slab of sick sludge spewed slowly through your speakers. The suffocating ambiance, 2-ton riffs and Neurosis-style drummer really give this band their edge. They aren't afraid to draw tricks from the funeral doom coffin but don't exactly make it a dead give-away in their sound. Their sludge roots shine through tectonically huge riffing and shrieking vocals. Heavy.

Gaza - He Is Never Coming Back

Last year Gaza managed to produce one of the noisiest pieces of Mathcore I have EEEEYYYAAAVAAAH heard. On this record they successfully manage to combine the fiery riffage of Mosquito Control-era Isis with the likes of Botch and Khanate. With the howling doom of the opening tracks and the quieter atmospherics of the interludes, this album is an anthem for the people of Utah.

Cough - Ritual Abuse

As I write this, I hear the sound of brain-synapse-stopping Doom/Sludge pour through my speakers. Dinosaur-like guitars stumble their way through a stone hall of tortured vocals like some sick mixture of Khanate and Electric Wizard. This bong-shattering record opens up with one hell of a headbanger. This is all-out Doom and destruction at its finest. Absolutely crushing.

Vulture (Pennsylvania)

After scoping out a sick design on Nev's (Who does rad artwork by the way) page I had to check these dudes out. After a little digging I came across their myspace and holy fucking SHIT are their tunes good (so good that I'm feeling rather inarticulate). A swirling mixture of Howl, EyeHateGod and Pentagram; this band spins out of control like a wheelchair-bound kid pushed onto a melting ice rink. Sick up-and_coming band. They deserve your support.

Unearthly Trance - V

Unearthly Trance's newest offering is nothing short of a hammer-swingin' Doom machine that leaves nothing but rubble in its wake. Titanic drums plow through thick slabs of guitars while the vocals recite cantrip-like passages out of 'The Big Book Of Doom'. These dudes come packing the thundah with nothing short of some of the heaviest riffs known to man. Each note is hand-soaked in a spidersilk/titanium mixture which is then introduced to pure dark matter. The resulting gravitational clusterfuck produces a noise that sounds an awful lot like 'V'.

Zoroaster - Matador

When asking my inner child how it feels to get mercilessly ass-pounded by forty-three grubby truck drivers; I also ask myself "Who the fuck is Glenn Totemsboro" and as I spin this question round and round I run through the massive riff-a-torium that ist mein mind. There I swim through megatons of a sludgy substance known as "Riffoplasm"; a thick brown goo that emits a low rumble similar to a mixture of rockin' licks and evil feedback. Some of the goo made a pretty interesting bit of noise so I uploaded it for you guys. Enjoy

The Fucking Wrath - Seasons Of Evil

Thrashing Sludge that will decimate your face; taking any hope of keeping your remaining teeth along with your wallet and ladyfriend. Riff after righteous riff create a vortex of swirling sexitude that will leave your ear-holes moist with ecstatic pleasure. Sit your fine ass down on this here sub-woofer and feel the down right nastiness of this album's low-end rumble. Baby, we've come a long way.

Lair Of The Minotaur - Evil Power

Lair of The Minotaur once again release their blood-thirsty brand of Sludgy Thrash. This time around they pack their battle axes with extra weight and their warhammers with more oomph. This band rules over the classic Conan-ized image of fantasy. Swords, Tits, Gore and Monsters. The way it was meant to be.

CoffinWorm - When All Became None

Heavy as ball blackened Sludge/Doom in the vein of The Abominable Iron Sloth, EyeHateGod and Winter. Great stuff. Riffs the size of mountain chains and vocals that could bust a moose's ear-drums at 3 km. Definitely a must have for lovers of the Doom.

The Atlas Moth - A Glorified Piece of Blue-Sky

The Atlas Moth are group with the usual inspirations of the Atmospheric Sludge genre; plenty of Isis and Neurosis worship but this time we find Blues and Prog Rock at the slow-throbbing heart of this monster. The sound is both monolithic and tame; a constant chaos brimming behind the walls of creaky guitars and plodding drums. This psychedelic march through head-bending territory will leave you a bit less than sane. This is a great release for anyone new to sludge or atmospheric metal.

Capricorns Discography

Instrumental Metal that combines the mathtensity of Don Caballero, Sludgy riffage of Pelican and the strained occasional vocals a-la Oxbow. The members of this band also play in Orange Goblin, Iron Monkey or Bridge & Tunnel. They released their second album, River , Bear Your Bones in August 2008. Both albums are featured here in just ONE FILE!!

Across Tundras - Western Sky Ride

A western-themed sludge outfit out of Nashville, Tennessee that recently got onto my favorite local label; Saw Her Ghost Records. These dudes seem to bring together a lot and therefore, the expectations are pretty high. Luckily they shatter any preconceived notion and bring it all to the table. You've got the Neurosis style ambiance, the dirge-like composition of Harvey Milk and the underlying punkery of Melvins. These guys stop at nothing to carve a niche for themselves and they do so without even breaking a sweat.

The Abominable Iron Sloth - The ID Will Overcome

These dudes came into my life in 2007 when I discovered one of their music videos from their first album. I listened to it for quite some time until they disbanded. Recently they've gotten back together to release a new album of fucking brilliant sludge. 'The ID Will Overcome' was my smokin' music last night and I gotta say it slays. Even the 14 minute drone song is godly.

Latitudes - Agonist

Most of the Sludge scene is overflowing with some very boring acts. Luckily Latitudes breaks the mold with their brand of simultaneously crushing sludge and bone-chilling melodies. The addition of a keyboardist adds depth to their gargantuan sound. The album destroys from start to finish; the opening track alone will get stuck in your head for weeks on end. Take heed; the new kings of sludge have arrived.

Year of No Light - Nord

There are a lot of bands out there that are trying to be "experimental" right now; bands that just rehash and bastardize what other people have done. Many bands in the metal community right now have taken to the idea of mixing Shoegaze with their music and few bands have outside of Neurosis, Isis and Alcest have pulled it off to this extent. Nord is a volatile mixture of Sludge, Drone, Black Metal, Shoegaze and hardcore. Blistering guitars suddenly take flight into a foggy realm of dreamlike wilderness as the physical repeatedly slips in and out of the ethereal. This record is an unreal journey in its entirety; encompassing many genres and blending them with such finesse that it's hard to see why this record is so overlooked.

Rosetta - The Galilean Satellites

Rosetta has sat on my hard drive for quite some time; 2-3 years I do believe. Occasionally I would pop them on and give them a try, riding their riffs and surfing through their tides of ambiance but only recently after the 'Great Bearded One' notified me that their 'The Galilean Satellites' release is meant to be played with both discs in unison did I really become interested. Sure Neurosis and Boris have done it before (and with FANTASTIC RESULTS!) but this still peaked my interest. Sure enough I popped this on one day in the proper manner and I was blown away, a few seconds in and I was wowed to the point of shouting to my girlfriend over the blaring guitars. I immediately purchased it before the first song was over. For people that are tired of the conventional "Post-Metal" (hurr durr hipster) borefest I suggest you pick this up; it does what this whole genre is known best for without becoming trapped in the pitfalls that have ensnared so many other NeurIsis clones out there. This record is a monument to sound.

This album is comprised of two parts; disc 1 (Sludge Riff-a-thon) and disc 2 (ambient backdrop) and when combined they tell an epic story of space travel which is continued on Wake/Lift.

Recommended for fans of: Supercontinent, Tephra, Isis, Neurosis and Year of No Light

Celeste - Discography

A fantastic french band that produces a fierce mixture of black metal, screamo and sludge. Think if Orchid listened to Neurosis and Wolves in The Throne Room for months on end and you've got the jist of it. Fierce vocals lead the attack while amble guitar lines pummel you in an assault of concentrated riffage leading in and out of droning passages that make the next onslaught that much more violent. The drums and bass build on the churning foundation and bring this musical maelstrom together with solid composition and rhythm. Great band.

Omega Massif - Geisterstadt

Omega Massif produce a heavy hitting brand of instrumental doom/sludge that reminds me of a very angry Pelican. The guitars create immense atmosphere and then rip right into heavy riffage that has made me headbang in public on numerous occasions. These dudes know what they're doing and they manage to avoid all the cliches that "Post Metal" has going for it at the moment. Geisterstadt is a great piece of work and I recommend you pick this up from them; these dudes DESERVE the money.
