Crushing Sludge/Doom/Death from Detroit

Doomed - Doomed to Death, Damned in Hell

Doomed bring it all to the table with some quality death/doom. Sauntering rhythms lead you across a menagerie of serpentine riffs that ebb and flow like a river of burning tar. I can't give this shit a higher honer. Did I mention that it's comprised of members of Autopsy, Funeral, Death and Abscess? Yeah, the pedigree should speak for itself. Chris fuckin' Reifert.

Asunder - A Clarion Call

Asunder summons forth a megalith of galaxy-sized doom and dread that feels steeped in the very darkness of the universe. The perfect pacing and spacing adds so much to the gloom-ridden atmosphere of this record. The sound of guitars plodding over some of the best doom drumming out there permeates the entire album and saturates the listeners soul with pure and utter darkness. The vocals drift between monk-like chanting to the raspy call of some crypt fiend. Absolutely, positively one of the best bands out there right now. 'A Clarion Call' is highly recommended.

Suma - Ashes

Suma's 'Let The Churches Burn' was one of my personal bangers for quite some time. It's got the slow stoner drone of Sleep with the heavy-hitting weight of bands like Conan and Sunn. Though don't be afraid, this isn't a drone doom album that's just going to consist of senseless filler, this record sports riffs out the ass. With explorative noise passages accompanying the destruction, how can a true lover of doom not stand in awe at Suma's craft. Very impressive.

Dopethrone - Demonsmoke

Ever wondered what Eyehategod would sound like if they had Attila Csihar as their vocalist? Well this is your dream come true! Dopethrone take EHG's brand of NOLA hatred and imbue it with demonic fire from the depths of the deepest bong load. Their riffs slug it out over groovy-as-fuck drums that drive the entire thing straight over the top. Pure doom bliss for those of us who like the slow 'n' heavy.

Galaxicon

Been a while since I've updated (without it being removed), so I thought I'd treat you guys to some of the ol' slow'n'grimey. Galaxicon seems to be a relatively young band from anything that I can tell, their earliest material that I can find being from 2010. They've got a nice ethereal doom sound reminiscent of Unearthly Trance and slower High on Fire. But the fun doesn't stop there, they've got some death metal vocals that sneak into the mix and tear shit up; the best example is mid-way through their track 'Rapture of The Deep'. This young band from Tennessee shows a lot of promise so keep an eye on them. Pound some Jack and blast these jams.

Indian - The Unquiet Sky

In anticipation for their upcoming release I've decided to throw this bastard up on here. A savage slab of sick sludge spewed slowly through your speakers. The suffocating ambiance, 2-ton riffs and Neurosis-style drummer really give this band their edge. They aren't afraid to draw tricks from the funeral doom coffin but don't exactly make it a dead give-away in their sound. Their sludge roots shine through tectonically huge riffing and shrieking vocals. Heavy.

Fister - Bronsonic

Charles Bronson is a bad mother fucker, and now he's overthrown Satan himself to bring you some bong-ripping doom laden with blackened atmospherics and EyeHateGod worship. Bronsonic is a good example of a new band putting their best foot forward into the crowded fray of modern sludge bands. The more and more that form, the more convoluted and bastardized the genre becomes. Luckily Fister are here to kick everyone's ass back into gear. Imagine if you will a healthy mixture of Dopethrone, Take As Needed For Pain and Suma's Let The Churches Burn; this shit rips. Fister blurs the line between sludge and doom with big riffs and nasty-as-fuck gnarly noisework. If you're looking for something to spark up to or maybe just need a good bit of music to put on at your next black mass, then this is it.

Suma - Let The Churches Burn

Suma has big guns behind the solemn cover that adorns the album. Slow-rolling thunder that swims and writhes in a scaly fuzz-covered skin; this behemoth treads softly when it needs to and turns into a full on stampede when the time is right. With guitars reminiscent of Unearthly Trance you know those riffs have gotta be heavier than a black hole filled with fat chicks.

Dot[.] - Life's A Bitch

Dot[.] does sludge right. They capture that feeling of pure hatred for mankind. Riff after riff reigns down like hellfire from above leaving only scorched landscape in its wake. ULTRA fuzzed out production digs a subsonic hole beneath your listening post just to shake your fucking brain until you die of an aneurysm. For those of you familiar with the feeling of waking up dopesick, covered in puke and cigarette ashes will dig this record above all else. This is an anthem to the burn outs and losers; a flag to sway for all time above the drugged out masses. Those japs may be hoarding Monster Hunter Frontier for themselves but at least they export shit like this.

I WANT TO DIE

Derketa - Goddess of Death

There ain't nothin' sexier than a girl that can get down with some good ol' fashioned death doom thunder. After laying dormant for years on end and finally emerging earlier this year for their first show EVER the girls are back in town. This release is a compilation of demos, EPs and rehearsals and sadly it's the only material a lot of us have had for over a decade. But fear not! New material is on the way! Cataclysmically evil guitar tone oozes over chunky drums and raspy vocals. An absolute essential.

Seven Sisters of Sleep - S/T

After a heads up from my friend Joe Sharpe, these dudes spilled into my lap like a steaming hot pot of curry. Their fast brand of doom and stoner puke comes out swinging like a gang of crusties after listening to EHG and Saviours on repeat for a week. While their catalog may be short, the riffs on this record bring them to the forefront of heaviness right now. With songs like 'Monastaries' and 'CCEC' standing at the top of this pile, there's a lot of great bits to keep you crawling back for more punishment.

Khanate - Clean Hands Go Foul

Hatred is an act of passion. Murder is a crime of passion. The need to snuff out the life of another lies within each person. That need screams loose from its tempered shackles in the form of Khanate, a howling force of doom that tests the boundaries of low-end torture and human sanity. With vocals that sound like they come from someone undergoing the Leng Tch'e this album will set your hair to stand on end while the instruments throb and mash you like blunt weapons. The final nail in the Khanate coffin seems to plunge its way through a million nerve endings.

Deathcrawl - The End is Not Near Enough

What do you think of when I say Ohio? That's right, a big sludgy ass vortex of terrible weather and ill-tempered bar attendants (also The Pretenders, Tool and Devo if you're a douche like me). Well Deathcrawl apparently was so inspired by the ugliness of Ohio that they managed to produce a maxilla-smashing (can you IMAGINE if that shit got smashed? For fuck's sake, you wouldn't die but you'd by puking blood, teeth and upchucked esophageal tissue for months to come) record. Fantastic low-end and vocals that for some reason remind me of Deicide. Pretty good stuff.

Gargantula - Infinitasm

Gargantula's brand of riff heavy doom metal seems to include influences from all over the map. With bits that sound like death metal, thrash and straight-forward sludge their sound is a seething amalgamation of metallic intensity. With moments that seem to flutter with frightening speed before snapping to a tar-covered crawl 'Infinitasm' seems like a vortex of temporal shifting and topsy-turvy guitar work.

Catacombs - In The Depths of R'lyeh

Catacombs manages to produce a haunting obelisk of funeral doom the likes of which we surface dwellers have never seen. While yes, this record is a few years old it's also one of the most ambitious pieces of doom metal to date. Many artists try to use Lovecraftian themes in their music and VERY (and I mean VERY, VERY few) can actually pull off anything that would hold a candle to the original subject matter. This however is a shining example of how metal bands should approach the subject. Not only does Catacombs produce some sub-atomic low-end for this record, there's also the presence of simultaneously eerie leads floating through this record like interstellar dust in the cosmic sea. The vocals are so mind-bogglingly low that the only way I can fully try to understand how they're produced is that the dude found a way to use his intestines as false vocal chords. The songs create a very heavy-handed atmosphere that pulls you in with their suffocating gravity, very reminiscent of being dragged to the briny deep. Did I mention the lyrics are just as beautiful as they are bone-chilling? That's write, the songwriting here is top notch right down to the flawless execution of the vocals, their delivery and their message.

This record is so damn expansive that you have to download it in two parts. Enjoy.

Conan - Horseback Battle Hammer

I just popped this ABSOLUTE MOTHER FUCKER of an album in and I swear on all that is doomy and crushing, that this IS the best Drone Doom record of ALL time or better yet the best doom record PERIOD. Absolutely insane across every spectrum. Massive guitar tone combined with some of the heaviest riffs I have ever heard all wrapped in mastodon fur and smilodon-tooth necklaces. The caveman subject matter along with the vocal delivery make this a unique and amazing experience. I've literally been unable to pry myself away from it and it's all-consuming sonic gravity. My headphones feel like their made of lead when these guys are blaring. Listen to this; seriously, turn off whatever you've got on and put on this record.

Electric Wizard - Black Masses

All of you Doom freaks have been patiently awaiting the arrival of our sonic messiah: The Electric Wizard. He comes from on high with an extinction-level wave of feedback, a legion of snarling riffs at his feet. This album doesn't fail to deliver in any sense. If you're already familiar with the band, you know what to expect. Closing with a tale from our recurring anti-hero, Drugula; you know it's gotta be good.

Mercy - Witchburner

It's Halloween time which means it's time to jam all things doom and gloom. If you're a fan of Candlemass then you've gotta know about Mercy: their vocalist's former project. Heavy riffs intermingled with haunting vocals and tales of witchfinders and warlocks; for this season, there's SCAREcly (harr harr) anything better. Pull out yer D20 kids, it's time to slay some fuckin' sorcerers.

Cough - Ritual Abuse

As I write this, I hear the sound of brain-synapse-stopping Doom/Sludge pour through my speakers. Dinosaur-like guitars stumble their way through a stone hall of tortured vocals like some sick mixture of Khanate and Electric Wizard. This bong-shattering record opens up with one hell of a headbanger. This is all-out Doom and destruction at its finest. Absolutely crushing.
