Face Down In Shit - Shit Bloody Shit [200th Post!]

To add to the seemingly endless stream of sludge that pours from the this blog I've decided that it's about time I posted some Face Down In Shit. This album opens with a surprisingly soft and beautiful intro that leads into some good rockin' while slowly building up to a doomed-out thrash attack. Who would've thought that sludge could even get to these speeds? Like sharks with jetpacks, these riffs fly hot out of the gate hungry for danks and sluts the likes of which you've never seen. With bleak song titles you'd be hard pressed to find things about this album that don't seem to drip with a sense of triumph over the shitfight of an existence we share.

For Fans of: Seven Sisters of Sleep, The Fucking Wrath, Barn Burner and Dopefight

THANK YOU to all of the people that have supported and shared this blog over the time that it's been up. It means a lot to me to see that there are people out there who still crave new music as much as I do. Through this blog I've met a lot of great people in music and hopefully that will continue for as long as this goes on. For those of you that have always wandered back here and scampered back off into cyberspace, this one's for you. Stay positive. Stay smart. Stay high. Stay alive.

Deceased - As The Weird Travel On

Deceased is one of those bands that have always stood out from the crowd with their brand of uniquely crafted death metal full of NWOBHM melodies and thrashtastic shredding. To be honest, I didn't even know this album existed until I stumbled onto it while browsing Nuclear War Now's webstore. After giving it numerous listens the infectious opening track practically embedded itself into my brain with its catchy nature and awesome song-writing. Soon I had this album playing at least every day. The sound on this album is admittedly somewhat of a departure from their older material but definitely not a step in the wrong direction. With the mixture of phantasmal guitars, tedious drumming and vocals that seem a LOT like those you'd find on a Napalm Death album (stupid to compare the two but being a life-long ND fan I can't help but hear the similarities). If you're looking for some hard-hitting Death Metal with a stupendous sense for melody and old school sensibilities then this is for you!

Soul Devour - Apocalyptic Anti-Human Annihilation

Soul Devour's brand of Singapore-born thrashing death is a throat-burning blend of fast riffs, catchy song structures and wraith-like vocals. These dudes know how to write an album that'll have you blasting it over your stereo and air-drumming along in no time. The album is pretty straightforward so instead of hearing me over-zealously slobber all over it why don't you just give it a listen.

Revocation - Existence Is Futile

While thrash may be quite dead (despite revivalist effort) there are bands operating in the genre that still create an interesting new playing field for any other bands soon to follow. Revocation levels the board with their blend of technical guitar and bass playing and upbeat rhythms/riffage. Combining the old trimmings of bands like Megadeth and Slayer with the later work of Voivod, Death, Between The Buried and Me and Aspid this band makes a new beast all of their own device. There are a lot of bands out there trying to reimagine thrash and let's face it, these guys are getting right in ways I could never have imagined. Superb musicianship, radical songwriting and high-flying leads filled with an odd sense of (dare I say) whimsy and hope. Surprisingly catchy song-structure makes this album one hell of a new release. Nice to see a young band tearin' it up.

Hellmouth - Destroy Everything, Worship Nothing

Fire and Brimstone! Anal Blood and Goat Semen! Hardcore, Thrash, Death Metal. It's all here in the fastest, meanest and angriest thing to come out of Michigan since well....anything. This bulldozer of an album combines the hefty riffs of Mammoth Grinder with the face-peeling speed and precision of Pig Destroyer and Incisor. Absolutely no fucking mercy. This is a no frills album with a bloodstream of piss and vinegar the size of the east Pacific. If you fancy yourself man enough to weather the storm you'll find some of the catchiest heavy music to come out in quite some time. Then again, you're probably too big of a fucking pussy to give it a listen.

The Fucking Wrath - Seasons Of Evil

Thrashing Sludge that will decimate your face; taking any hope of keeping your remaining teeth along with your wallet and ladyfriend. Riff after righteous riff create a vortex of swirling sexitude that will leave your ear-holes moist with ecstatic pleasure. Sit your fine ass down on this here sub-woofer and feel the down right nastiness of this album's low-end rumble. Baby, we've come a long way.

Lair Of The Minotaur - Evil Power

Lair of The Minotaur once again release their blood-thirsty brand of Sludgy Thrash. This time around they pack their battle axes with extra weight and their warhammers with more oomph. This band rules over the classic Conan-ized image of fantasy. Swords, Tits, Gore and Monsters. The way it was meant to be.

Barn Burner - Bangers

This one is dedicated to my lovely gal. Barn Burner combines the old school riffage of bands like The Sword and Black Sabbath with a potent concoction of Bison BC and Municipal Waste. Party music.

PS: Did I mention there was a song on this mother fucker called Brohemoth? Listen now you limp-wristed cock-sneeze.

Nocturnal - Arrival of The Carnivore

German Blackened Thrash of the utmost awesome. Chunky riffs seethe with pure Slayer and Sodom influence while old school Bathory beats attack your sternum like a battle axe. The music is filled with everything you'd expect from an old school revival act PLUS fuckwin artwork. This is an album that must be experienced at MAXIMUM VOLUME.

For fans of: Skeletonwitch, Bathory, Withered and Sodom

Retro Thrash Week Wrap Up: Exodus - Bonded By Blood

While it's not a 'Retro Thrash' record per-se. This is an album that helped get the ball rolling and definitely my favorite Thrash Album of all time. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this bad boy from beginning to end. Each riff, each drum fill and every bit of rollicking thrash mayhem is just pure fucking awesome. This is something that needs to be in your possession if you claim to like thrash in any shape or form. This is a classic.

Retro Thrash Week Day 6: Toxic Holocaust - An Overdose of Death

Once again, it's been a long day. I just narrowly missed posting an entry tonight and instead I'm going let someone else do the reviewing: "With the recent resurgence of thrash metal and the waves of new bands, there's a danger groups like Toxic Holocaust will get lost in the shuffle. Their latest effort An Overdose Of Death makes it evident that is not going to happen. It's old school thrash played fast and loose with ripping riffs and frequent solos.

Toxic Holocaust has a more ominous edge than a lot of thrash bands. Slayer is an obvious influence, along with other Bay Area groups like Exodus, Testament and early Metallica. There's also traces of punk in their sound. The songs on An Overdose Of Death are typical thrash, but very well played with really catchy riffs"

Retro Thrash Week Day 2: Gama Bomb - Tales From The Grave In Space

Fantastic Thrash Metal from Ireland that shouldn't be missed by anyone who's into the genre. This band is so quirky and fun that I can't help but have a good fucking time when I listen to them. Take equal parts Exodus, Municipal Waste and then add liberal amounts of Sci-Fi movies, Saturday Morning Cartoons, zombies and video games. This is some pretty geek-savvy metal and I gotta admire that considering most metal bands are more interested in acting hard or kvlt to care about having fun. While not terribly original, this recore is still a fuckin' blast to put on and thrash about to. Hell the band even offers it up for a free download on their label site. So I trust that after listening to this while playing old Sega games you'll buy it.

RETRO THRASH WEEK! Havok - Burn

In honor of one of my favorite genres finding its way back into my heart I'm going to be doing a week long spot on Retro Thrash and Old School Thrash, hopefully relighting that fire or introducing you to something new completely. Fast, Fun and utterly Brutal; the albums that slide up in the upcoming weeks have quickly become staples of my collecting and I'd recommend them to anyone looking to have a rip-roaring good time.

Day 1:

Havok - Burn

This new band has distilled everything good about the Thrash scene of yore. Combining riffing akin to Death, Slayer and Exodus; this album is like taking a time machine back to the days of jean jackets, Nike Vandals and upbrimmed baseball caps. Impressive drumming lines the album like a velvet outline while the constantly riffing guitars march and shred through acres of bodies and artillery fire. Also a rare occurrance (for me at least) the bass player seems to be extremely up front, sometimes even taking lead position with incredible punk-styled melodies thrown in between hectic drums and soaring guitars. This album recaptures everything that was once good about Thrash Metal; back when Metallica wasn't producing whiny bullshit, back when Morbid Saint was melting faces and back when Megadeth still had that piss and vinegar. Download if you want to rock the fuck out, purchase if you want to help revive Thrash.
