Back to business. As you may or may not know my opinion on the state of today's post-rock scene I would just like to say that Gifts From Enola have gone above and beyond my expectations. Combining heavy riffs with climbing structures that evolve and devolve throughout the course of a song (instead of relying on a simple 'quiet, crescendo, quiet, SUDDEN EXPLOSION OF GUITARS AND REVERB, fade out' pattern that seems to prevail in this type of music) much like the likes of Isis and Mogwai without falling into the doldrums that line the path tread by followers of both bands. If you want something akin to Capricorns, Caspian and Pelican then this is for you!

Mogwai - Come On Die Young

Honestly; I was unaware of this Mogwai record's existence until today when I came across it in a bargain bin. I picked it up for dirt cheap and popped it on in the middle of the night. I was pleased to hear a very dynamic and cinematic piece of instrumental post-rock from a (then young Mogwai) band I had honestly grown a bit tired of. This early Mogwai record is not to be overlooked.

Instrumental Metal that combines the mathtensity of Don Caballero, Sludgy riffage of Pelican and the strained occasional vocals a-la Oxbow. The members of this band also play in Orange Goblin, Iron Monkey or Bridge & Tunnel. They released their second album, River , Bear Your Bones in August 2008. Strangers Die Every Day - Aperture For Departure

Beautiful Instrumental Rock with strings and horns; kind of reminds me a bit of Mono's latest record with a less epic feel and more of a European-folk dirge vibe. It reminds me of something I might hear while watching an old silent film set in Venice or walking through a small Irish town. This really is a great piece of music; very soothing and at the same time, very engaging.

Instrumental rock of the mathy variety. Lots of high-energy jazzy bits tossed together with the usual post-rock fare. Great mellow atmosphere; the echoey passages give way to nostalgia-ridden riffs, those seemingly heard before and those that bring something new to the table. Something about this reminds me of summers spent running around outside, getting caught in rainstorms and long drives at night. There's something about this record...most definitely.

Irepress - Samus Octology

An interesting instrumental band that blends the lines of Post-Rock, Math Rock, Hardcore and Sludge. The mind altering concoction bounces back and forth between beautifully melodic and staggeringly heavy. This is the bastard child of Pelican, This Will Destroy You and Don Caballero. If this sort of thing swings your tackle, then you should pick up this album immediately; don't both downloading, buy it.

Red Sparowes

Red Sparowes are a band that I feel are extremely underrated in their line of work. Post Rock was once a genre accredited for inventive musicians and now it's become a near parody of itself where every band just seeks to imitate GY!BE, EITS, TWDY and Mono (So many acronyms). Though a few bands continue to persist and create a nice blend of the good ol' stuff with refreshing elements. The Red Sparowes have that quality in spades; not only do they incorporate a pedal steel guitar (a favorite instrument of mine) but they also have a healthy dose of prog rock here and there. As if that wasn't awesome enough, the band was founded by members of Isis and Neurosis! Bryant Clifford Meyer (Isis), Josh Graham (Neurosis) and Jeff Caxide (Isis). Though Caxide and Graham are no longer members, the band still keeps going. To celebrate the sheer amount of distilled awesome, I've included the band's two full length albums with this post. Please buy them, as they're a great piece for any record collection.

Do Make Say Think - Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord is Dead

Do Make Say Think is a breath of fresh air when it comes to post rock. Forsaking the EITS 'crescendo-chord-crescendo' formula of operation, they ply in favor of a jazz-influenced sound laden with rich effects and sweeping horns. The saxophone and flute parts are beautiful and the simplistic guitar is meditative and blunderingly brilliant in all of its rawness. Most of the album was recorded in a barn in Canada and if you turn your speakers up you can literally hear the barn doors creak, the crickets chirp, fall of feet on dirt and the mumbling of voices. This record has more than enough atmosphere to supply dozens of planets. This is the perfect album to pick you up out of a bad mood or calm frayed nerves. I recently purchased this album used after listening to it on and off for the past 4 years and still to this day it stands as a massive influence to the way I play and write music. Please purchase this if you can, Constellation Records is an honest label that does nothing short of amazing things.
